Ceremony to mark the passing of the much-loved Ambassador and great friend of Cuba, His Excellency Mr Kojo Owusu Gyamadua Amoo-Gottfried, Ghana’s first Ambassador to Cuba.

Accra, 7 August 2026. We participated in the traditional ceremony held one week after the passing of the beloved Ambassador and great friend of Cuba, His Excellency Mr. Kojo Owusu Gyamadua Amoo-Gottfried, at the age of 92. Kojo Amoo-Gottfried was Ghana’s first Ambassador to Cuba following the reestablishment of relations between 1983 and 1988; he was in charge of the Scholarship Program for Ghanaian children and youth promoted by Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz and then-Ghanaian President Jerry John Rawlings. We had the pleasure of meeting him and hearing his anecdotes about the Commander-in-Chief. On October 20 of last year, we invited him to the Embassy for the celebration of National Culture Day, where the “Cubanitos” (graduates of Cuban universities) paid tribute to him. In 2023, he received the Medal of Friendship awarded by ICAP, which was presented to him in Ghana in 2023. We joined his family and friends at this ceremony to celebrate his life and work. Rest in peace, dear friend.
