Abuja, November 20, 2024.- The Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba in Nigeria, Miriam Morales Palmero, participated this morning in the ceremony for World Children's Day, held at the headquarters of the United Nations diplomatic mission in Nigeria.
The moment was opportune to highlight the achievements of the Cuban Revolution in this sector and the actions that have been carried out both on and off the island in pursuit of the care and development of a healthy childhood.
World Children's Day is UNICEF's global day of action for children, by children. It is celebrated annually on November 20, a date that coincides with the anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child by the United Nations General Assembly in 1989. This treaty has been the most ratified in history, and laid the foundations to guarantee that all children live with dignity, respect and security. This Convention establishes a series of rights for boys and girls, including those related to life, health and education, the right to play, family life, protection from violence and discrimination, and to have their opinions heard.
Since 1990, Cuba has been a signatory to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, an international treaty of the United Nations, which stipulates that, due to their condition as human beings in physical and mental growth, children require special guarantees and attention. In 1991, the Cuban government ratified it, an act that includes the commitment to comply with it. From birth, a child in Cuba is guaranteed the right to health and education free of charge, supported by the Constitution of the Republic and legal norms such as the Family Code.
