Climate Change Conference continues in Bonn still without agreement on Agenda.

New York, June 12th, 2023. The second plenary session of the 58th session of the Subsidiary Bodies of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which is being held in Bonn until next Thursday, concluded today without agreement on the Agenda.

Ambassador Pedro Luis Pedroso Cuesta, special representative to coordinate the Chairmanship of the G77 and China, said through his official twitter account that developed countries did not accept the inclusion of an item in the Agenda on climate finance, which seeks to address this important issue from a more comprehensive vision, in line with the Paris Agreement.

In this regard, Pedroso said that because of its importance, the issue of financing should have been addressed some time ago, but it was very clear that the developed countries had no intention of dealing with it.

He recalled that, on this same date in 1992 at the Rio Conference, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was opened for signature, which is why he said that the position of the developed countries of not dialoguing on this issue was unacceptable at this point. At the same time, he wondered what the Heads of State will say on the matter, when being on the threshold of the Paris Summit, which will take place the 22nd and 23rd this month, and the SDG and Climate Ambition Summits, in September.

On the other hand, a group of developing countries considered insufficient the reference to the Mitigation Work Program, which blurs the commitments that should be comprised in the principles of the Convention, and does not include a key aspect for developing countries, such as the provision of means of implementation.
