SRI LANKA, October 9, 2018. - With an extensive program of activities, organized by the Socialist Youth Union of Sri Lanka (SYU) it was paid tribute to the Heroic Guerrilla, Ernesto Che Guevara, on the occasion of the 51 Anniversary of his assassination, in Bolivia.
On the morning of October 8, a wreath was placed next to the tree that was planted by Che during his visit to Sri Lanka, in August 1959, in the community of Moragahahena, Horana, with the participation of parliamentarians, members of the local government, members of the Association of Friendship Association and officials of the Embassy of Cuba in Sri Lanka.
Simultaneously and throughout the day Medical Camps was organized on district basis, an activity that was headed by the Member of Parliament, Dr. Nalinda Jayathissa.
In the afternoon there was a political-cultural gala in homage to Che in the community of Wennappuwa, in the west of the island. During the same the Secretary General of the People’s Liberation Front Party (JVP), Tilvin Silva, highlighted the ideas of justice and solidarity of Che, which represents an example for all humanity. He also referred to the close friendship that existed between Che and Fidel.
The Ambassador of Cuba, Juana Elena Ramos Rodríguez, referred to the example of Che for the new generations for their dedication to just causes, his tenacity and spirit of work. The Embassy donated books about the work and thought of Che to the library of the Socialist Youth Union.
Likewise, the occasion was propitious for those present to express their rejection of the economic, financial and commercial blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba and demand its end. All recorded their claim by signing a banner urging the United States to lift sanctions against Cuba.
