Commemoration in Thailand on the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

BANGKOK, September 25, 2019.- The Cuban ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand, Héctor Conde Almeida, gave a lecture at the “Chulalongkorn University” in commemoration of September 26th as International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, designated by the United Nations Organization (UN) in 2013. The presentation was attended by students of the Spanish Section of the Faculty of Arts and the Center of Latin American Studies of the University, authorities and professors of the prestigious institution.

The event highlighted the urgent need to achieve this priority objective of the work of the United Nations, its background; the historic milestone of the adoption by the General Assembly, on 7/7/2017, of the “Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons”; as well as the relevance of the commemoration in 2019 of the 52nd Anniversary of the precursor “Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean” (Tlatelolco Treaty).

The meeting served as a framework to deepen knowledge on the history and legacy of the Cuban Revolution on its 60th anniversary, the positive impact of Cuba's extensive international medical cooperation in the world and the negative effects of the illegal economic, commercial and financial blockade that for 60 years has maintained the government of the United States against the largest of the Antilles.

The colloquium paid tribute to the work of the Commander in Chief, Dr. Fidel Castro Ruz, in matters of nuclear disarmament and the fight for World peace, as deserved tribute and remembrance of his legacy and the validity of his ideas in today’s international politics. The young students of Spanish language and Political Science shared their questions and concerns, in a pleasant exchange that allowed them to expand their knowledge about Cuba, Ernesto Che Guevara, the ongoing bilateral cooperation; as well as the 500th Anniversary of Havana to be celebrated on 16/11/2019.
