Harare, August 13, 2026 – A plaque commemorating the centenary of the Historical Leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, was unveiled today in Harare with the attendance of high-ranking representatives of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) party, the Government, Parliament, and in solidarity with the Caribbean island.
The recognition of the work and legacy of the Commander-in-Chief was part of a tribute led by Ambassador Susellys Pérez Mesa, which included a photographic exhibition featuring images of Fidel Castro with numerous leaders from the African continent.
The National Commissar of ZANU PF, Comrade Munyaradzi Machacha, shared the honor of unveiling the plaque with the Ambassador, accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Hon. Albert Mavunga, and the Chairman of the Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee and the Friendship Group with Cuba, Hon. Wester Shamu.
Speaking on behalf of the ruling Party, Machacha emphasized the global significance of the date, considering Fidel a leader in the struggle for liberation, a champion of international solidarity, and a brother who stood firmly with the oppressed of the world.
He noted that 40 years after his visit to Harare, it is clear that Cuba's heart beats for Africa.
While demanding a complete and unconditional lifting of the economic sanctions imposed by the United States, Machacha reaffirmed unwavering solidarity with the Communist Party and the Cuban people.
High-ranking dignitaries, along with ambassadors and diplomats from more than twenty countries, toured the exhibition showcasing the Cuban leader's ties to Africa.
Representatives from the Fidel Castro Chair at the University of Midlands, the Zimbabwe-Cuba Friendship Association, the ZANU-PF youth organization, and graduates from the Caribbean nation highlighted the significance of the Commander-in-Chief's centenary.
