Abuja, 10th May, 2026.- The Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDHR), a grassroots civil society organization in Nigeria committed to the promotion and protection of human rights, justice, human dignity, and the sovereign rights of nations, issued a statement expressing its firm solidarity with the Government and people of Cuba in the face of the worsening humanitarian and economic crisis caused by the latest sanctions and executive actions adopted by the Government of the United States under the presidency of Donald Trump.
In its statement, the CDHR denounced the intensification of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed against Cuba for more than six decades, describing it as an unjust unilateral measure that continues to inflict severe harm on the well-being and development of the Cuban people.
The organization expressed particular concern regarding the recent measures aimed at tightening the economic and energy siege against the Island, including restrictions intended to prevent fuel supplies from reaching Cuba and provisions seeking to sanction companies, entities, and individuals maintaining commercial or financial relations with the country.
The Committee stressed that these actions have significantly worsened the difficulties faced by the Cuban population, affecting essential sectors such as public healthcare, food security, transportation, electricity generation, education, and access to medicines and basic goods. It also warned about the humanitarian impact caused by prolonged power outages, limitations in food distribution, and the growing difficulties in sustaining essential services for millions of Cubans.
The CDHR reaffirmed that the Cuban people have the legitimate right to determine their political, economic, and social future without external interference or unilateral coercive measures that violate the principles of International Law and the Charter of the United Nations.
The Nigerian organization also reiterated its support for the historic resistance of the Cuban people and recognized Cuba’s determination to defend its independence, sovereignty, and dignity in the face of increasing external pressure.
Finally, the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights called on the international community, human rights organizations, and peoples around the world to strengthen solidarity with Cuba and demand the immediate lifting of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on the Island.
