The MEP for the Syriza-democratic alliance party Dimitris Papadimoulis, vice president of the European Parliament and member of the European Parliamentary Group of Friendship with Cuba, condemned the US blockade against Cuba. Here are his words:
In April 2019, the Trump administration stepped up the already unacceptable economic sanctions against Cuba in an attempt to stifle the Cuban economy. Therefore, he reversed any small positive step taken by the Obama administration in April 2015 with the gradual relaxation of sanctions. These measures further reduce the country's development potential and inhumanely affect the standard of living of the Cuban people. The suffocating US blockade imposed since 1960, more than 60 years, is already an outdated and inhumane practice that has been condemned every year for decades, almost unanimously by the UN General Assembly. In the run-up to the elections, President Biden promised to reconsider these sanctions. What should be the new president's immediate priority is putting words into practice. Because serious humanitarian and economic consequences occur every day, especially at a time when Cuba is plagued by the pandemic. Any delay should be avoided. Our goal should ultimately be to build bridges of understanding and dialogue at all levels. In civil society, at the inter-parliamentary and transnational level. I believe that with mutual respect and cooperation we can and must achieve more.
