Cuba is moving forward with a broad process of economic and social transformations designed to address the country's complex challenges, safeguard the achievements of the Revolution, and ensure the continuity of its socialist project.
During the closing session of the Extraordinary Plenary Meeting of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba held in June, First Secretary of the Party's Central Committee and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, explained that the approved measures constitute a necessary and responsible response to a context marked by the tightening of the United States' economic, commercial and financial blockade, the country's structural economic constraints, and an increasingly complex international environment.
The package of reforms comprises 176 measures grouped into 23 strategic areas. Their objective is to boost domestic production, strengthen the socialist state enterprise, expand the decentralization of economic management, encourage foreign investment, increase agricultural output, improve financial and monetary mechanisms, and create stronger incentives for development, while maintaining the leading role of the socialist State.
In his address, President Díaz-Canel stressed that the current circumstances require boldness, responsibility and creativity, without abandoning the principles of social justice that have guided the Cuban Revolution. He emphasized that these transformations do not represent a change in Cuba's political course, but rather an updating of the country's economic model to make socialism more efficient and better able to meet the needs of the Cuban people. The President also underscored that the Communist Party has the responsibility to lead this process with transparency, popular participation and ideological firmness, promoting solutions that will help overcome current difficulties while creating new opportunities for the nation's development.
As President Díaz-Canel stated in his closing remarks: "Reality demands urgent and necessary changes from us, but never to abandon socialism; rather, to make it stronger, more prosperous, and sustainable."
