Cuba Advocates for an Inclusive and just Artificial Intelligence for African Descent at the UN Permanent Forum

During the Thematic Debate on Artificial Intelligence and Digital Justice for People of African Descent, held in the framework of the Fourth Session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on People of African Descent, the Counsellor of the Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations, Kendry Sosa Mena, reaffirmed our country's commitment to the ethical and equitable use of these emerging technologies.

He highlighted Cuba's support for initiatives that promote the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), with the aim of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and emphasized the need to prevent these technologies from reproducing stereotypes or manifestations of racism and racial discrimination.

The Cuban diplomat also called for ensuring universal access to artificial intelligence, especially in developing countries. In this regard, he denounced unilateral coercive measures that limit access to key technologies and affect the economic, scientific and social progress of many nations.

Sosa Mena referred to the National Strategy for the Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence, approved in May 2024, as one of Cuba's advances in this area. He explained that within the framework of this strategy, "SocIA" was created, the first Cuban sovereign platform for artificial intelligence, which aims to promote the use of intelligent systems by national institutions.

He concluded with a firm call to place artificial intelligence at the service of humanity, ensuring its ethical, inclusive and equitable development for all.
