Cuba advocates a revitalized General Assembly that responds to the interests of the majority of the member states.

New York, November 15, 2018.The Revitalization of the General Assembly is an indispensable process within the reform process of the United Nations Organization and shall consolidate the democratic and participatory nature of this Body, through the full exercise of the faculties enshrined in the UN Charter; said today the Deputy Permanent Representative of Cuba to the UN, Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, in her statement at the joint debate on agenda items: Implementation of the Resolutions of the United Nations (122) and Revitalization of the General Assembly (123).

The representative also reflected on the need to guarantee the sustainability of the trust of the international community in the United Nations and its legitimacy, which includes the fact that the Organization truly responds to the collective interests and of the majority of its Member States.

Rodríguez Abascal called for respecting the resolutions of the General Assembly and strongly rejected the use of the United Nations chambers to generate and promote campaigns against their own Member States, which is an open violation not only of the resolutions and norms of the UN, but also of the foundational purposes and principles of this Organization.

Once again, the Cuban diplomat stressed the need for an adequate balance among the principal organs of the United Nations, in accordance with the UN Charter; as well as the cessation of the growing and dangerous tendency of the Security Council to encroach on the scope of action of the Assembly, which is a violation of the procedures. She added that as a result of the process of revitalization of the Assembly and of the Organization in general, the interaction between the Secretariat and the latter should be strengthened, so that the former can respond more effectively to the mandates determined by the Member States.
