St. John's, July 4: The Honorable Molwyn Joseph, Minister of Health, Wellness and the Environment traveled to Cuba where he completed an intense work program in coordination with the Ministry of Public Health of the Republic of Cuba. He is also a Member of Parliament of Antigua and Barbuda, representing the constituency of St. Mary's North, and is accompanied by the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Rhonda Sealy-Thomas and Dr. Albert Duncan, Medical Director of the local hospital Mount St. John's Medical Center ( MSJMC). Among other activities, the minister held a meeting with his Cuban counterpart Dr. Roberto Morales, vice president of the State Council and Minister of Public Health and visited the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology where they signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the General Director of that prestigious research center, Eulogio Pimentel, with the perspective of introducing the Cuban drug Heberprot-P in Antigua and Barbuda for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers. As a result of the collaboration on health between Cuba and Antigua and Barbuda, a large number of students from the sister Caribbean nation have graduated from the Latin American School of Medical Sciences (ELAM) and as part of the agreements with CARICOM, Cuba maintains its offer of scholarships under which students from Antigua and Barbuda continue to enter ELAM annually. For almost two decades, Cuban health collaborators have served in Antigua and Barbuda. It is hoped that the minister's visit to Cuba will contribute to the increase of collaboration in the field of health in favor of the wellbeing of the population of Antigua and Barbuda.
