The Bahamas, 25 June 2019. A few months ahead the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Commonwealth of the Bahamas and the Republic of Cuba, the Cuban Ambassador to The Bahamas, Ismara M. Vargas Walter, used the words “friendship, solidarity and respect” to describe the relationship.
The Bahamas and Cuba officially established diplomatic relations on 30 November 1974. For decades the two countries have worked together in the fields of education, health, sports, culture, national security and agriculture, to name a few.
The diplomat shared some highlights, including the celebration this year of the 15th anniversary of the cooperation in the area of education with more than 200 Cuban teachers over these years in different communities of New Providence and the Family Islands. Ambassador Vargas Walter also spoke about the Health professionals, namely pharmacists and Biomedical Engineers working in the Bahamian capital and Grand Bahama. She also mentioned the most recent examples of cultural exchange and joint actions on issues of national security such as migration and illegal fishing.
