Cuba and The Bahamas strengthen ties in the area of health

NASSAU, December 8th, 2017. - The Ambassador of Cuba to The Bahamas, Ismara Vargas Walter, held yesterday afternoon a cordial meeting with the Bahamian Minister of Health, Dr. Duane Ernest Lascelles Sands, at the headquarters of this institution.

During the exchange, both parties reviewed the existing collaboration in this sector and discussed the possibility of expanding the number of Cuban health professionals in The Bahamas.

For her part, the Cuban diplomat spoke about the effects of the blockade on Cuba and how despite this the Cuban government maintains the medical collaboration in various countries on the five continents. She also extended an official invitation for the Minister of Health to visit Cuba in 2018 to exchange with his Cuban counterpart.

Also in attendance, Rena Glinton, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Sherrilyn Bastian-Wallace, Deputy Permanent Secretary; as well as other officials. The Cuban diplomat was accompanied by Dr. Lorenzo Pérez Sánchez, Chief of the Medical Brigade and the Second Secretary at the Cuban Embassy, ​​Vanesa Ortega Guerrero.

Currently, a 33 brigade of health professionals is working in The Bahamas as part of the agreement signed in December 2015, between Cuban Medical Services (SMC, in Spanish) and the Public Hospital Authority of The Bahamas (PHA).
