Cuba and Fiji strengthen cooperation in the field of sports

Suva, June 24, 2026.- Minister of Youth and Sports of Fiji, the Honorable Jese Saukuru, received the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, Néstor Torres Olivera, on a courtesy visit aimed at advancing the bilateral cooperation agenda in the areas of sports and youth.

During the meeting, they discussed the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on sports development, signed by both nations in 2024 and designed to create greater opportunities for cooperation to raise the competitive standards of Fijian sports through the exchange of technical expertise and collaboration in training young talent.

Minister Saukuru expressed his gratitude for Cuba’s commitment, underscoring the importance of diversifying Fiji’s strategic partnerships to strengthen the national sports sector. He noted the resilience of the Cuban people in the face of the U.S. embargo, which he witnessed firsthand during his visit to the island in 2023. For his part, the Cuban ambassador reaffirmed the Cuban government’s willingness to continue sharing its technical expertise, thereby strengthening South-South cooperation in the Pacific.
