Cuba and G-77 call for more unity and cooperation at UNESCO.

París, November 10th, 2023.- At UNESCO, Cuba reiterated its vision from the pro tempore presidency of the Group of 77 and China of the importance of unity and cooperation among the countries of the South.

"Convinced that only through unity, solidarity and international cooperation will we be able to move towards the realization of our legitimate aspirations for development, our Presidency has promoted an agenda that addresses the historical demands of our countries," said the Minister of Education,  Naima Ariatne Trujillo.

The head of the Cuban delegation to the 42nd General Conference of UNESCO said at a ministerial meeting of the Group of 77 plus China and the Non-Aligned Movement that these historical demands respond to areas such as education, culture, the environment, science, technology and innovation.

Trujillo described it as an honor for the island to lead the bloc that brings together 134 of the 193 member states of the United Nations during 2023.

"It is already clear that the modest progress made in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda is at risk of being reversed. The aspiration endorsed there to leave no one behind is far from being fulfilled and we are witnessing a more divided and selfish post-pandemic world," the Cuban minister warned.

In his speech at the event held in the context of the 42nd General Conference of UNESCO, which is being held in this capital from November 7 to 22, Trujillo denounced the more than thirty measures and systems of unilateral coercive measures against developing countries that remain in full force.

The island's representative reviewed some of the relevant moments of Cuba's Presidency of the Group of 77 plus China, including the forums hosted in Havana in February by the ministers of Education, in May by the ministers of Culture and in July by ministers and high authorities of the Environment.  Science, Technology and Innovation.

Likewise, he highlighted the relevance of the recent Summit of Heads of State and/or Government of the Group of 77 and China on "The current challenges of development: the role of Science, Technology and Innovation", also held in the Cuban capital.

The declaration adopted at the Summit calls for the development and use of science, technology and innovation in an ethical and responsible manner, for the strengthening and expansion of infrastructures for research and development, while calling for the promotion of new research, development and transfer of the necessary technologies,  Trujillo recalled.

The text, she continued, reflects the contribution of these elements to the eradication of poverty in all its forms and dimensions and to the achievement of sustained, inclusive and equitable economic growth, human well-being and sustainable development.
