CUBA AND THE ITU STRENGTHEN COOPERATION RELATIONS

Geneva, 24 March 2025. Ambassador Rodolfo Benítez Verson, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations Office at Geneva, held a meeting today with Dr. Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava, Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

Dr. Zavazava expressed his gratitude to Cuba for the excellent organisation and significant outcomes of the World Youth Summit, held from 11–13 March in Varadero, Matanzas Province. He highlighted the large number of participating countries from various parts of the world.

He described Cuban President Miguel Díaz Canel Bermúdez's participation in the event and his contribution to the success of the Summit as memorable.

The senior international official acknowledged Cuba's significant progress in the field of telecommunications and other areas of interest to the ITU, such as innovation, digital transformation, accessibility issues, among others, despite the serious constraints arising from the economic blockade imposed by the United States.

The Cuban Ambassador reaffirmed the priority given by the country to issues covered by the ITU, including telecommunications, digital development, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence.

He reaffirmed the Island's support for the vital work of this international organisation and its commitment to contribute to the important World Telecommunication Development Conference to be held next November in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Both parties agreed to continue expanding cooperation between Cuba and the ITU through future projects in various areas of mutual interest, including strengthening the country’s capacities in the field of telecommunications and within the context of the digital transformation process.
