Westmoreland, Jamaica, 13 April 2019. For the twelfth occasion, the Westmoreland Chapter of the Jamaica Cuba Friendship Association organized the national act in celebration of the Anniversary of the Victory of Playa Girón, this Saturday April 13th, in the afternoon.
The Petersfield Institute served as the venue for the event, chaired by the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, Mrs. Inés Fors Fernández, Berthel Moore, Mayor of Savanna-La-Mar, and Mathias Brown, President of the Chapter.
The event was attended by almost a hundred people, including members of the Cuban medical brigade who work in the region, local leaders, parents of students and graduates in Cuba, members of the solidarity movement and families from the community.
The attendance of young people and children at the celebration attracted attention, as a sign of the intergenerational nature of the friendship between both peoples. The youngest participants were responsible for entertaining the rest of the audience with their singing and dancing.
In their interventions, the Jamaican speakers highlighted Cuba's resistance to the constant aggressions of Imperialism, as well as the help that this small country has given to the Westmoreland region, to Jamaica, and to all Third World countries, through medical collaboration and the granting of study scholarships to young people with scarce resources.
The main speech was delivered by the Cuban Ambassador, who addressed the long-lasting solidarity shown by the Jamaican people. She recalled the Cuban people’s victory in Playa Girón, 58 years ago, and commented on the challenges faced by Cuba and the peoples of the region in the face of recent threats posed by Imperialism.
The ceremony closed in an environment conducive to fraternization between Cuban and Jamaican participants, who enjoyed dishes typical of both countries, prepared by the organizers.
