Kingston, Jamaica, 24 September 2019. "A brief, but of great significance ceremony," So described the Honourable Minister of Health and Wellness of Jamaica, Dr. Christopher Tufton, the signing ceremony of the protocols to extend the Technical Cooperation Agreements on Health between Cuba and Jamaica, held today afternoon at the headquarters of the said Ministry.
The documents were signed by the Ambassador of Cuba to Jamaica, H.E Mrs. Inés Fors Fernández, and the Honourable Minister Tufton himself who expressed the deep gratitude of the Jamaican people for Cuba's selfless cooperation in this sector.
The origin of this collaboration dates back to 1976, when at the request of the Government of Jamaica, Cuba sent a brigade of 14 doctors. This figure has considerably increased and today, 255 Cuban health collaborators, with a preponderant role of the nursing staff, provide services throughout the Jamaican territory.
Both the people and the executives of the Ministry of Health and Wellness of Jamaica have a very good judgment of the performance of Cuban health professionals. In all these years, the specialists of the Greatest Island of the Antilles have offered almost a million and a half consultations, have performed about 31,000 operations and have saved more than 2,550 lives.
