Kingston, Jamaica, 25 de febrero de 2020. The official signing ceremony of the new Agreement for Technical Cooperation in Health between Cuba and Jamaica took place this morning, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Health and Wellness of Jamaica.
The document was signed by the Minister of Health and Wellness of Jamaica, the Honourable Dr.Christopher Tufton, and the Head of the Cuban State Mission in Jamaica, Ambassador Inés Fors Fernández.
The origin of this cooperation dates back to 1976, when at the request of the Government of Jamaica, Cuba sent a brigade of 14 doctors. This figure has increased and today 276 members of the Cuban medical brigade, with a preponderant role of the nursing staff, render their services in various points of the Jamaican geography.
In his remarks, Honourable Dr. Tufton said: “We are here this morning renewing this technical cooperation agreement as an expression of our trust in association and to ensure continuity in the provision of health services […] and I have no doubt that this cooperation will continue to grow successfully”.
Both the people and executives of the Ministry of Health and Wellness of Jamaica praise highly the performance of Cuban health professionals. In all these years, the specialists from the Greatest Island in the Antilles have conducted more than a million and a half consultations, have performed some 32,000 operations and have saved more than 2,600 lives in this sister Caribbean nation.
