Cuba and New Zealand celebrate 20 years of diplomatic relations

Wellington, March 28, 2019.- The opening of the photo exhibition, "Cuba through Kiwi eyes", served as the core event to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and New Zealand.

During the inauguration, Cuban Ambassador Mario Alzugaray highlighted the importance that Cuba attaches to links with New Zealand, as an example in the relationship between two small and distant nations that have managed to maintain reciprocal attention, with practical results in bilateral cooperation and in matters of mutual interest.

On the New Zealand side, deputy secretary for Foreign Affairs, Jonathan Kings, took the floor noting the good shape of bilateral relations and the will of the New Zealand government to strengthen ties with Cuba. King also highlighted the messages of condolences sent by the president and the minister of foreign affairs of Cuba, following the terrorist attacks on 15 March in Christchurch, as a sign of solidarity towards his country.

The photo exhibition was the result of a contest launched last November by the Cuban Embassy, through which New Zealanders who had visited Cuba were encouraged to send their contributions. More than a thousand photographs were received, among which the best 80 were chosen to be exhibited this time.

The result has been fantastic, highlighting the quality of the exhibited works and the value that New Zealand visitors give to the exchange with the local people, whom play the central role in most of the images shown.

The event took place at The Atrium in the Faculty of Architecture and Design at Victoria University of Wellington and counted with the sponsorship and support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of New Zealand, Havana Coffee Works, the Latin American Center for Asia Pacific Excellence (CAPE), Cuba Dupa Festival and the cultural project Cuban Fusion.
