Cuba and Nigeria: A historical bond that is strengthened in the present

Abuja, January 17, 2025 – The Cuban Embassy in Nigeria received the visit of a delegation from the Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), headed by its Director, Abike Dabiri-Erewa. During the meeting with the Cuban Ambassador to Nigeria, Miriam Morales Palmero, the depth of the cultural and historical ties that unite both countries since colonial times was highlighted, when the first slaves, mostly from Nigeria, arrived in Cuba, leaving an indelible mark on the Cuban cultural identity.

In her speech, Ambassador Morales Palmero highlighted the importance of this bond and expressed her gratitude for the presence of the Director of Technology, Transfer and Innovation, Hon. Abdurahman Terab, at the event “A Decade of Africa Descendants” held in Havana, Cuba, last December. During the event, the director had the opportunity to exchange ideas with the President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, as well as with other delegates from various parts of the world, strengthening ties of cooperation and cultural exchange.

For her part, Director Dabiri-Erewa highlighted the cultural and social similarities between Nigeria and Cuba, and extended an invitation to the Caribbean nation to participate in the opening of the “Door of Return”, an event of great historical significance that will take place at the end of the year in Lagos State. This ceremony symbolizes the reunion of the descendants of enslaved Africans with their ancestral roots.

Both parties expressed their interest in continuing to strengthen ties between Cuba and Nigeria, strengthening cooperation in cultural, historical and educational matters, reaffirming the commitment to continue working together for the recognition and appreciation of African heritage in Cuba and in the world.
