Cuba and the U.S. hold new round of migration talks

High-level delegations from Cuba and the United States are holding here today the second round of talks on migration issues, a diplomatic source confirmed.

The deputy director general for the United States of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minrex) of Cuba, Johana Tablada, said on the social network Facebook that she is attending today the migration talks between the two nations.

She noted that the Cuban delegation is headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío, while the U.S. side is headed by Deputy Assistant Secretary of the State Department Emily Mendrala.

He added that senior representatives of the Cuban immigration authorities and the Cuban Border Guard Troops, as well as representatives of several U.S. government agencies are also participating.

On Tuesday, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez published a message on Twitter in which he stressed that the holding of bilateral migration talks in Havana is in line with the mutual commitment to promote orderly, legal and safe migration.

Last November 9, senior officials of the two countries held talks in Havana on migration and consular issues.

At that time Fernandez de Cossio stressed the importance of the resumption of immigration and consular services at the U.S. Embassy in Havana, including the processing of non-immigrant visas.

The meeting in the Caribbean island's capital followed up on the first round of negotiations on the issue since 2017 that took place in Washington in April this year.

During the exchange both sides reviewed compliance with bilateral agreements on the matter and the mutual commitment to ensure regular, safe and orderly migration.

The closure of U.S. consular services in Havana under alleged health incidents of its diplomats, never corroborated, meant the non-compliance with the existing migratory agreements between both nations.

Recently, the diplomatic headquarters of the North American country announced that it will expand its services as of January 2023.
