New York, June 26, 2024.- Ambassador Yuri A. Gala López, Chargé d'Affaires a.i. of the Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations, addressedd, last Tuesday, the plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly for the presentation of the annual report of the Security Council corresponding to the 2023.
Regarding the aforementioned report, the representative of Cuba pointed out that the document omits the analysis of violations of Security Council resolutions by Israel, including resolution 2334 (2016) and others adopted following the escalation of the conflict since October 2023. while this body remains incapable of stopping the genocide being committed against the Palestinian people by the Occupying Power, with the complicity of the United States.
Later, Gala López advocated for the Council to adopt its regulations, an essential issue for transparency and the necessary accountability to all Member States, on behalf of which this body must act, in accordance with Article 24 of the Charter. of the United Nations.
“A comprehensive reform of the Security Council is needed to make it a transparent, democratic and representative body,” he said.
Likewise, the Cuban Ambassador called for an end to the selective manipulation of the methods and practices of the Security Council as a tool of pressure against sovereign States, based on political agendas and domination, which undermines the role of this body in the preservation of international peace and security.
He said that the Council must stop expanding the scope of the definition of international peace and security, to the detriment of the functions and responsibilities of the General Assembly.
“We call, once again, for the Security Council to adhere to its mandate and stop usurping the functions of other United Nations bodies,” added.
