New York, February 1st, 2023.- “The world has come to an especially critical moment when concrete actions are needed if we want to achieve Sustainable Development Goals”, stated Ambassador Pedro Luis Pedroso, permanent representative of Cuba to United Nations, during the first regular session of the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS segment dedicated to United Nations Development Programme, UNDP.
While addressing the meeting as President of the Group 77 and China, Pedroso Cuesta stated that limits to financing to development is contrary to what the world requires today and could have irreversible effects in the wellbeing of individuals from the developing world and the future generations.
The Cuban diplomat praised UNDP support to the appeal to reform the international financial architecture to ensure the significant participation of the developing countries in the international economic decision-making.
Likewise, he stressed that the access to the vaccines against Covid-19 should not be a challenge anymore as the open market should not become an argument to perpetuate inequality and discrimination.
The importance to reduce the financial breach in order to bolster the economic recovery of developing countries and the needed increase of the Official Aid to Development was also highlighted.
The Cuban Ambassador referred to other two key issues to Group 77 and China: the full implementation of the climate change agenda in accordance with the principle of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities, as well as the necessity to mobilize adequate investments on sustainable and resilient infrastructures.
