Riyadh, November 17th – Cuba is participating in the Diplomatic Conference of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), being held in the capital of Saudi Arabia, from November 11th to 22nd, 2024.
In this international conclave, aimed at concluding and adopting the Treaty on the Law of Designs, the delegation of the Island is made up of the Cuban Ambassador to the Kingdom, Vladimir Gonzalez, and the Third Secretary of the Embassy, Vicente Abad.
The Diplomatic Conference represents the last stage of negotiation of the aforementioned treaty and was preceded by a Special Session of the Permanent Committee on the Law of Trademarks, Industrial Designs and Geographical Indications that took place from October 2nd to 6th, 2023, in Geneva, Switzerland, the headquarters of WIPO.
The future treaty aims to streamline the global system of protection of industrial designs, making it easier, faster and more affordable for designers to protect their work both in domestic and foreign markets.
Following the guidelines and indications of the Cuban Industrial Property Office (OCPI) and in close coordination with the Latin American and Caribbean Group (GRULAC) at WIPO, the Cuban delegation has defended at the conference the island's point of view of favoring the positions of developing and least developed countries, in order to maintain a balance between the interests of the rights-holders and the public interests of society.
