Cuba: Blockades and sanctions do not contribute to peace and international security.

New York, November 21st, 2023.- Ambassador Gerardo Peñalver Portal, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, participated on Monday, November 20, in the open debate of the Security Council on the promotion of sustained peace through common development.

During his speech, Peñalver Portal highlighted the relevance of the issue in a context of a global multidimensional crisis exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, in which inequalities are perpetuated inequality and poverty, as consequence of the unjust international economic order.

He added that international peace and security are constantly threatened by conflicts, acts of aggression, unconventional wars, blockades, attempts at regime change and frequent violations of the Charter of the United Nations and international law.

The Cuban diplomat also stressed that blockades and sanctions do not contribute to international peace and security, so the international community, including the United Nations system, must continue strongly rejecting the imposition of those measures and work for its unconditional elimination.

In this same context, Peñalver Portal conveyed his country's concern about the serious escalation of violence between Israel and Palestine, a consequence of decades of Israeli practices of illegal occupation and colonization, in flagrant violation of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.
