New York, 22 May 2020. Cuba participated today in the Operational Activities for Development Segment of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC).
In her statement, Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, Deputy Permanent Representative and Chargé d´Affaires a.i., reiterated the need to continue to preserve, both within ECOSOC and the General Assembly, the inclusive, open and transparent nature of all the consultations that lead up to the final decisions on the United Nations Development System repositioning. She stated that all matters pertaining to said repositioning must fully respect national sovereignty, independence, national ownership and leadership, bearing in mind the various development levels and realities on the ground in developing countries.
Rodríguez Abascal mentioned the role of the regional commissions in this process. Especially, she appreciated the enormous and very positive contribution of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) to all these endeavors in the Latin American and Caribbean region.
During these trying times, she said at the end of her statement, the international community, developed and developing countries alike and the UN System must demonstrate more than ever our ability to work together in solidarity.
