Nassau, 24 February 2017.- The International Symposium "Equipping Public Institutions and Mobilizing Partnerships for the Implementation of Agenda 2030 on Sustainable Development and the Samoa Road of Small Island Developing States (SIDS)", concluded yesterday in The Bahamas. The event took place between 21 and 23 February in the Bahamian capital.
During the final session of the event, the delegation of Cuba appealed the international community to adopt a New International Economic Order based on solidarity, justice and equity, for the effective implementation of the ambitious 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, leaving no one behind in the developing countries, including the small island states (SIDS).
The Cuban delegation also denounced the permanence of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on Cuba for more than half a century, which constitutes the main obstacle to the materialization of the National Economic and Social Development Plan until 2030.
At the event, several islands supported the Cuban approach on the need for developed countries to meet their international commitments to provide the Official Development Assistance and to transfer environmentally friendly technology on preferential terms to developing countries. Having these resources in a timely manner and without delay, is a fundamental element, for SIDS to cope with their vulnerabilities and special conditions.
The event was a key space where SIDS shared their experiences in aligning the Sustainable Development Goals in their Development Plans, as well as the challenges of climate change for the implementation of sustainable development.
