The Cuba - CARICOM Day and 45 years of diplomatic relations between the Bahamas and Cuba are celebrated in Nassau

Nassau, December 8th, 2019. Representatives of the Bahamian government, of the diplomatic corp, workers of the educational and health collaboration, together with Cubans residents in the Commonwealth met at the residence of the Cuban ambassador to celebrate Cuba-CARICOM Day and the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Attorney General Carl W. Bethel, representing the Bahamian government, said that bilateral relations have benefited the two peoples, and gave as an example the prestige achieved in the last twenty years by Cuban teachers, particularly those who work with children who have special educational needs. Mr. Bethel also thanked the solidarity of Cuba, for being one of the first countries on sending humanitarian aid after the passage of Hurricane Dorian. He pointed out that the links between the Commonwealth of the Bahamas and Cuba must continue to be fostered, which date back to historical connections between the Lucayan Indians of these islands and the Taino communities.

In his words, the Cuban ambassador Alejandro García del Toro stressed that in that period the links expanded in several sectors, among which education and health stand out for the value they have had for the Bahamian people. He mentioned Operation Miracle, conceived by the leader of the Revolution Fidel Castro that allowed the return of the vision to many citizens of this country. Referring to the potential of the links, he said that Cuba and The Bahamas, along with the rest of the CARICOM countries, must assume the wisdom of Fidel who, in 2002, during the first CARICOM Summit - Cuba said:Unity , dignity and solidarity and rational integration is the only way to face the common challenges of the exclusive, unequal and globalized world that threatens all of us ”.

The opposition leader Philip Davis, the Permanent Secretary of the Bahamian Foreign Affairs Ministry Peter Deveaux and other executives and officials of that institution also attended the activity.
