At the Embassy of Cuba, a political-cultural activity was held to commemorate the 55th Anniversary of the founding of the Organization for African Unity (OAU), which became in 2002 African Union (AU).
The event was chaired by Ambassador Pedro Luis Despaigne González, and Mr. Alexander Nyarko-Opoku, First Vice Chairperson of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) of Ghana. It was also attended by other representatives of the organizations and people that make up the Campaign of Solidarity with Cuba, among them: The Socialist Forum of Ghana (SFG); the National Students Union of Ghana (NUGS); students and professors of the University of Ghana; the Association of Ghanaian Graduates in Cuba (ESBECAN). The members of the Cuban Medical Brigade who work in Accra, and a group of Cubans living in Ghana also attended the event.
The activity began with a minute of silence on the occasion of the fatal aviation accident that took place in Havana on May 18. In the act they used the word: Dr. Lamech Addo, doctor graduated in Cuba, and member of ESBECAN, who paid tribute to the Commander in Chief, Fidel Castro and the founders of the OAU, such as Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and thanked to Cuba for its solidarity with the continent and with Ghana in particular; Mr. Augustine Saaakur-Kargbo, the Secretary General of the Teachers and Educational Workers´ Union (TEWU) - a union affiliated to TUC - and who was part of the XIII May Day International Brigade, who ratified the Ghanaian workers' support for the Cuban Revolution; the young Nigerian Michael Olusegun Olusanya, also a member of the XIII Brigade, and who presented his project of “Plan a Tree Campaign” to contribute to the fight against the blockade; the representative of the Socialist Forum of Ghana, Mr. Awna P. Gyhenyame, who highlighted the validity of the unitary dream of the founding fathers of the AU.
All the interventions had as elements of coincidence: the importance of African unity; the gratitude to Cuba and its leaders for their support for the liberation and development of the African continent; the close relations between the peoples of Cuba and Ghana, the rejection of the blockade; the commitment to stay mobilized to achieve the lifting of the blockade and the return to Cuba of the territory of Guantánamo illegally occupied by the United States.
The Cuban Ambassador, after reiterating the ties of blood of Cuba with Africa, thanked the participants for their expressions of solidarity, reiterated the continuity of Cuba's solidarity and cooperation policy towards the African continent. The activity concluded with the planting of a tree, as a symbol of the commitment to life and the fight against the blockade. The Pan African Television channel covered the event, which also featured the performance of a traditional African music group.
