Statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cuba rejects in the strongest possible terms the decision by the government of the Dominican Republic to expel ten diplomatic officials from the Cuban Embassy in that country, together with their families.
There is absolutely no justification for this decision by the Dominican authorities. Cuban diplomats have always acted in strict accordance with the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and with absolute respect for the laws of that sister nation.
There is no other explanation for this action other than the Dominican Republic’s government bowing to pressure from the US government, which, in its determination to isolate Cuba, has set out to damage our diplomatic relations with countries in the region.
This is not the first time that the Dominican government has aligned itself with the United States’ hostile policy and escalating aggression against our country. Cuba’s exclusion from the postponed 10th Summit of the Americas and the Dominican Republic’s change of vote on the Cuban resolution against the blockade at the UN General Assembly are examples of this.
With this latest move, the Dominican authorities are causing significant damage to relations between the two governments, but they will not be able to sever the deep-rooted and historic ties between the Cuban and Dominican peoples, which have been forged from the struggles of both countries for independence right up to the present day. Distinguished Dominicans form part of the glorious pages of Cuba’s history, and vice versa. Our peoples share cultural, economic and solidarity ties, which we will not renounce.
The Dominican people can always count on the unwavering friendship and solidarity of the Cuban people.
