Cuba condemns the impact of the blockade on telecommunications development at the UN.

New York, 27 April, 2026 – Cuba reaffirmed its commitment to a fairer and more inclusive international information and communication order during the 48th session of the UN Committee on Information.

The Permanent Representative of Cuba to the UN, Ambassador Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, reiterated his delegation’s willingness to actively participate in the Committee’s work. He acknowledged the efforts of the Global Communication Department and emphasized the need to ensure accuracy, objectivity, and integrity in information.

The diplomat highlighted the promotion of multilingualism as an expression of cultural diversity and as a key tool for enhancing equitable access to content. In this regard, he noted progress in the generation and dissemination of information in multiple languages as part of the Organization’s activities.

Soberón Guzmán underscored that the computerization of society is a strategic priority for Cuba, based on sustainable development and social inclusion, supported by the country’s scientific and human potential, and guided by a strategy aimed at strengthening technological sovereignty and access to technology.

He condemned the aggressive policy of the United States government, which severely restricts these efforts. He stressed that the blockade directly impacts Cuba’s telecommunications sector by restricting access to infrastructure, digital services, and technological platforms, thereby affecting connectivity and international cooperation.

The Cuban Ambassador also warned against the inappropriate use of cyberspace and radio and television broadcasts aimed at destabilizing Cuba, in flagrant violation of international law. He reiterated his country’s commitment to the responsible use of technology, based on respect for sovereignty, non-interference, and cooperation among states.
