Cuba Counts on Zimbabwe in the Face of US Threats

Harare, May 7, 2026 – Cuba can count on the historic helping hand of Zimbabwe, assured the Cuban Ambassador, Her Excellency Susellys Pérez Mesa, to The Herald, the leading newspaper of this African nation.

The Head of Diplomatic Mission emphasized that the Caribbean island maintains its unwavering position of defending its sovereignty, despite Washington's attempt to impose an unwanted conflict.

The Cuban people's resolve to defend our homeland is unwavering, and it will always be better to count on the helping hand of Zimbabwe, especially in the face of the continued hostility and threats of war from the United States government, Pérez Mesa stated.

We are prepared, she said, to confront it if necessary and defend our national values and the right to self-determination, counting on this African country for the development of a multipolar front of international solidarity.

We are living through a particularly dangerous time for humanity and for Cuba, an increasingly unstable international scenario where the use of force, unilateral coercive measures, cognitive or unconventional warfare, the illegal occupation of territories, the conquest of natural resources, and the disregard and violation of international law are becoming normalized, the Ambassador asserted.

All of this is very worrying, and we must prevent it. In the last 10 years, and especially since January, the United States has intensified the economic embargo, in place for almost seven decades, including the blockade of any oil shipments to the island, considered an act of war under international law.

The diplomat emphasized that Cuba does not represent a threat to the US or any other country. Nevertheless, more than six million citizens have sworn allegiance to defend their nation, overcome adversity, and move forward, even in the worst circumstances and at whatever cost, especially in the centennial year of the Commander-in-Chief and historical leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz.

During the interview with The Herald, the Ambassador addressed other topics such as bilateral relations and the recent International Meeting of Solidarity with Cuba and Anti-Imperialism, “100 Years with Fidel,” in Havana, with more than 750 delegates from 36 countries representing 152 political, social, labor, solidarity, youth, and peace organizations.

Pérez Mesa praised Cuba’s role in Africa’s struggle against colonialism and the end of Apartheid, its commitment to solidarity, and the commemoration this year of the 40th anniversary of the beginning of medical and educational cooperation in Zimbabwe.
