CUBA DEFENDS THE FUNDAMENTAL ROLE OF THE UN CHARTER IN THE PROMOTION AND PROTECTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS.

Geneva, June 23, 2025. In the framework of the 59th regular session of the Human Rights Council, Cuba highlighted the contributions of the Charter of the United Nations to international standards for the promotion and protection of human rights,

Speaking as one of the panelists at the event “80th Anniversary of the UN Charter”, Ambassador Rodolfo Benítez Verson, Permanent Representative of Cuba, emphasized that the relevance of the UN Charter in the field of human rights cannot be ignored or minimized in any way.

Although the Charter did not develop human rights extensively, it established key principles in this area, including the organic link between human rights; the establishment of international cooperation as a basic principle of action in this area; and the necessary balance between individual and collective rights.

The event provided an opportunity to discuss the current challenges that threaten the UN Charter, eighty years after its approval. Participants stressed the need to strengthen multilateralism in the face of attempts by some States to undermine its legitimacy.

In this regard, the Cuban representative condemned in the strongest terms the aggression of the United States and Israel against Iran and the genocide of the Palestinian people.
