Livingstone, Zambia, April 9, 2025 – Cuba today reiterated its commitment to the vision of a shared future between Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean, a reflection of their shared past and legitimate aspirations for prosperity and social justice for all.
Speaking at the Second United Nations Africa-Americas Tourism Summit, Cuba's representative, Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Her Excellency Susellys Pérez Mesa, urged working together to strengthen tourism strategies and explore new forms of collaboration.
Connectivity between these regions is essential, and she said we need to facilitate exchanges and the creation of routes that enhance our destinations with a focus on sustainability.
In the diplomat's opinion, Cuba and Africa are united by history, blood, and culture, a relationship marked by solidarity in both directions.
He also reiterated his gratitude for the unwavering solidarity of the African continent in our fight against the economic, commercial, and financial blockade unjustly imposed by the United States for more than six decades.
Addressing the participants, Pérez Mesa asserted that this policy of hostility toward his country has a direct impact on the development of the tourism sector and associated services.
As an example of the blockade, the diplomat highlighted White House measures such as restrictions that deprive US citizens of the right to freely visit Cuba, despite the geographical and cultural proximity.
The Ambassador extended greetings on behalf of the Cuban people, thanked Zambia for its hospitality, and recalled the upcoming International Tourism Fair, Fitur 2025, the industry's most important professional event, from April 30 to May 3.
"We are convinced that the sector is a priority source of income in development strategies, but also a means to preserve and promote our natural resources, culture, and identity," she emphasized.
"We recognize the work of the UN and the opportunity this meeting provides to foster dialogue and cooperation, as fundamental elements for the sustainable development of the so-called industry without smokestacks."
According to the representative of the Caribbean country, tourism, as a strategic sector, faces significant challenges and, at the same time, presents opportunities to innovate and adapt.
Responsible and sustainable tourism is key to the social and economic development of our nations." We have great potential that must translate into greater growth and well-being for our societies, the Cuban Ambassador stated.
