"For the Cuban Parliament, overcoming the pandemic and building a better tomorrow is a noble wish that we salute and strive to help achieve," said Esteban Lazo Hernández, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and president of the National Assembly of People's Power, during the general debate of the 142nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), which took place virtually.
Lazo Hernández made reference to the experiences obtained in the prevention and confrontation of the coronavirus, and explained the development of the five Cuban vaccine candidates. He also denounced the effects of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States Government, intensified by the Donald Trump administration with more than 240 unilateral coercive measures that the current president, Joe Biden, maintains active.
Faced with this scenario, he quoted the words of the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, during the closing of the 8th. Congress of that organization, in which he assured that sustaining the vitality of the country's main services and serving the entire infected and suspicious population, in the midst of the blockade, is proof that we are on the right side of history.
The meeting focused on discussing the confrontation with SARS-COV-2 and how parliaments can play an active role in post-pandemic recovery efforts.
Also participating were Ana María Mari Machado, vice president of Parliament, and Yolanda Ferrer Gómez, president of the International Relations Commission; as well as Jesús Rafael Mora González, official of said commission and secretary of the Cuba Group in the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
