Geneva, 14 February 2024 - The Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland actively participated in the 75th executive session of the Trade and Development Board of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), which took place from February 12 to 14.
During the meeting, the Cuban delegation denounced the persistence and strengthening of unilateral coercive measures against countries, such as the economic, commercial and financial blockade that the U.S. administration has maintained against the Caribbean island for more than six decades. Measures of this nature hinder the full development of nations and threaten the quality of life of their populations, the Cuban delegation emphasized.
At the presentation of the 2023 edition of the "Trade and Development Report," the Cuban delegation acknowledged the commitment and efforts of the UNCTAD Secretariat in the preparation and publication of the report, produced by the conference's Division on Globalization and Development Strategies.
The report warns about the stagnation of the global economy, with a slowdown in growth in most regions compared to the previous year.
The Cuban delegation highlighted the relevance of the report, which presents clear arguments and policy proposals in areas that require special attention. The importance of addressing critical issues such as the need to reform the international financial architecture to close financing gaps; guarantee the provision and mobilization of greater assistance on favorable terms to developing countries; close the financial gap to boost economic recovery in developing countries, among other issues, were also discussed.
