During the meeting of the Security Council held in the Arria Formula format under the theme: "The Impact of Unilateralism and Bullying Practices on International Relations," Ambassador Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, reaffirmed his country's commitment to multilateralism and its rejection of bullying practices as a threat to development, peace and international security.
He also emphasized Cuba's firm opposition to unilateral coercive measures that violate international law; to trade wars and punitive tariffs, which violate the Charter of the United Nations, affect international trade and the world economy, and exacerbate the huge gap between developed and developing countries, in a context in which social exclusion, inequalities and poverty affect millions of people on the planet.
In his speech, the Cuban diplomat denounced the advance of unilateralism, practices of blackmail, and economic and political coercion, noting that these actions undermine the rules-based international system and exacerbate global inequalities. "We are on a dangerous path where respect for international law is being replaced by selfish agendas and unilateral impositions," he warned.
He denounced the criminal and illegal economic blockade against Cuba and its direct impact on the country's productive, commercial and technological potential, as well as its commercial relations with any country in the world, including the United States, despite the geographical proximity and potential benefits for both peoples. He also stressed that the re-inclusion of Cuba in the illegal list of state sponsors of terrorism increases the enormous economic and humanitarian damage caused by the blockade.
Likewise, he condemned the shameful campaign to discredit the international medical cooperation that Cuba offers to more than 50 countries, based on petty interests and political motives, ignoring the right to health and life of millions of people.
The Cuban representative reiterated the urgency of reforming the financial architecture and the international trading system, advocating the strengthening of special and differential treatment for developing countries and the promotion of sustainable supply chains that prioritize their economic growth and equitable access to markets. "Unilateralism and protectionism, including unilateral trade restrictions, are inconsistent with the World Trade Organization agreements and must be eliminated," he said.
Mr. Soberón Guzmán concluded by reaffirming the role of the United Nations as the main bulwark against global threats. He called for greater solidarity, cooperation and dialogue, as well as a firm and renewed commitment to multilateralism, in order to ensure peaceful coexistence, maintain international peace and security, and find lasting solutions to systemic problems.
