Cuba denounces US financial blackmail to the United Nations.

New York, October 23, 2018. The Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo, participated today in the debate on Agenda Item 138 of the UN, entitled "Improving the financial situation of the United Nations.”

In her statement, the diplomat thanked the acknowledgement received by Cuba, together with other 42 countries, for having fulfilled all its financial obligations towards the Organization, which is only an evidence of its commitment to multilateralism and to the values and principles of the Charter of the United Nations. She also highlighted how the island faces the obstacles and sacrifices imposed by the US economic, commercial and financial blockade, which affects, hinders and sometimes hampers the payment of Cuban assessments to the Organization and to other international organs.

Rodríguez Camejo pointed out that the withholding of payments by the United States, its largest contributor, has a negative impact on the full compliance with the mandates agreed by the Security Council for Peacekeeping Operations; forces the organization to maintain large debts with troop contributing countries, many of them developing countries; and impedes the return of surplus balances from operations already closed to the countries to which they belong.

The Cuban representative denounced the financial blackmail to which the Organization is subjected by the United States and indicated how this country benefits from the main distortion in the methodology for the calculation of the scales of assessments, while obtaining juicy profits for the businesses that many of their companies make with the Organization and for hosting it in its territory. However, she said, it intends to impose its will on the rest of the members and reduces the amount of assessments it has to pay; being such assessments lower than what they should be according to the ability to pay principle.
