New York, 28 February 2019. Cuba attended today the meeting of the Ad Hoc Working Group on the Revitalization of the Work of the General Assembly, where it stated that Revitalization is a priority.
In his statement, Ambassador Humberto Rivero, rejected the use of the General Assembly forum, and therefore the United Nations Organization, to endorse national agendas and unilateral political maneuvers, aimed at promoting interference in the internal affairs of other States, overthrow legitimate governments and violate the sovereignty and political independence of the Member States.
The Cuban diplomat acknowledged that Cuba is bound to respect and fully comply with the Charter of the United Nations, as well as the Rules of the General Assembly and other organs. Therefore, he was against the use of the chambers of the Organization to generate and promote campaigns against its own Member States, which constitutes an open violation not only of the resolutions and norms of the UN but also of the purposes and founding principles of this Organization.
The General Assembly is the main deliberative, policymaking and representative organ of the United Nations, consequently, its reform should only consolidate the democratic and participatory nature of the Organ, through the full exercise of the powers enshrined in the Charter of the UN by its 193 member states, he said.
The Caribbean nation has also warned, on more than one occasion, about the need for an adequate balance among the main organs of the United Nations, in accordance with the Charter, as well as the cessation of the growing and dangerous tendency of the Security Council to encroach on the scope of action of the Assembly which is a violation of the procedures.
