Cuba elected as deputy member of the ILO Governing Body.

Geneva, 14 June 2021. Cuba has been elected as an associate government member of the Governing Body of the International Labour Organization (ILO) for the period 2021-2024.

Cuba was re-elected today as deputy member of the ILO Governing Body with 214 votes, being the deputy member with the most votes and the second best result among a total of 46 candidates (18 titular and 28 deputies).

The voting took place in the context of the 109th International Labor Conference, which will be taking place virtually until June 19th, with the participation of delegates from the 187 ILO member states to discuss sector issues and recovery focused on people in the post-COVID-19 phase.

Cuba has been a member of the Governing Body for 13 previous terms, subsequently to the year 1959. As a member of the Organization's main decision-making body, it has always valued tripartite dialogue and cooperation with ILO bodies.

The Governing Body, composed of 56 titular members and 66 deputy members, meets three times a year and takes decisions on the Organization's policy.

As a founding member of the ILO in 1919, Cuba has played an active role in the work of the Organization, adhering to the principle of tripartism and social dialogue.

The country has ratified 90 ILO conventions, 72 of which are in force. It is a State Party to the eight conventions considered fundamental, two of the governance conventions and 80 technical conventions.

Cuba is committed to the promotion and protection of workers' rights and trade union freedoms, and has expressed its willingness to continue working to promote the necessary international cooperation in the ILO, with the aim of universalizing the realization of the goals of full employment and decent work for all, in a scenario marked by the current unjust international order, which makes social justice, decent employment and the rights of millions of human beings a chimera, even in developed countries.
