Cuba is elected to the executive boards of three subsidiary bodies of ECOSOC by overwhelming majority.

New York, 8 May 2019. Cuba was elected by overwhelming majority to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Executive Board from 2020 to 2022; to the World Food Program (WFP) Executive Board from 2020 to 2022; and to the Commission for Social Development from 2020 to 2024. The three agencies are subsidiary bodies of the United Nations Economic and Social Council, which is also known by ECOSOC, its English abbreviation.

In three consecutive votes, 50 of the 54 member states of ECOSOC voted in favor of the presence of the Caribbean country in these bodies, being an overwhelming victory for Cuba, which attaches great importance to sustainable development in its three dimensions, as well as to the development and well-being of children.

The representative of the island, Ambassador Ana Silvia Rodríguez Abascal, denounced the maneuver of the United States delegation and its disrespect for the agreements taken within the Latin American and Caribbean Group regarding candidatures.

After almost 60 years of the unjust and illegal economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States Government, this country has not been able to isolate Cuba, which has gained the support of the international community thanks to its cooperation history and commitment with the just causes of the peoples.
