New York, January 31, 2024.- During the First Ordinary Session of the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS, held this morning at the UN headquarters, Cuba highlighted the fundamental role of the United Nations Development Program in promoting the use of new technologies.
Ambassador Yusnier Romero Puentes, deputy permanent representative of Cuba to the United Nations, said in his speech that, in the case of the Greater of the Antilles, “the UNDP has contributed to the optimization of management and decision-making processes in different sectors through the application of digital technologies from productive units to the territorial and national level.”
In this context, Romero Puentes explained that the restrictions associated with the blockade imposed by the United States government affect Cuba's access to various external sources of financing and some technologies, which is why this policy continues to be the main obstacle to the implementation of the Agenda 2030.
Later, he insisted on the importance of UNDP having sufficient regular resources to allow it to be strategic and flexible, and to provide predictable differentiated services based on the needs of the countries in which programs are implemented.
Before concluding his statement, the Cuban diplomat reiterated his country's commitment to continue strengthening cooperation ties with the UNDP.
