Cuba highlights the role of the United Nations in the promotion of Development.

New York, October 19, 2018."Globalization has been held tight by the patterns  of neoliberalism, thus it is not development that goes global but poverty; it is not respect for the national sovereignty of our States, but the violation of that respect; it is not solidarity among peoples, but "every man for himself" in the  unequal competition prevailing in the market. " were the words of the Historical Leader of the Cuban Revolution used by Juan Miguel González Peña, First Secretary of the Cuba Permanent Mission to the UN , to begin his statement at the Debate on agenda item Globalization and Interdependence, of the Second Committee of the United Nations.

The diplomat of the island reflected on how in an increasingly interconnected and interdependent world, that faces growing challenges to the current multilateral order, the role of the United Nations in promoting development and the need for multilateralism has never been so relevant; and rejected unilateral, protectionist and exclusionary actions that promote strictly national interests, to the detriment of necessarily global and multilateral solutions to the problems and challenges facing humanity.

He emphasized that achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development presupposes recognition of and respect for the diversity of approaches, views and models chosen by each people, taking into account their diverse national circumstances, capacities and priorities; likewise he called for a transparent, open, non-discriminatory and inclusive multilateral system that maximizes the benefits of globalization while minimizing its costs.

González recalled that in the case of Cuba, its development strategies are limited by the unjust and criminal blockade imposed by the government of the United States, for almost six decades. He noted that this has not been an impediment for the island to show significant achievements in its economic and social development, thanks to the efforts of its people and the cooperation provided by sister countries of the region and the world; which also shows that cooperation among nations is an element for their development.
