A commemorative event to mark the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science was held this Tuesday at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Ambassador Daylenis Moreno Guerra, Deputy Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, reiterated the importance of women's effective participation in science and the need to remove the obstacles that prevent their full social inclusion.
She described as crucial the role of Cuban women in scientific progress and in the economic and social development of the nation. She explained that 34% of the members of the Cuban Academy of Sciences are women, making it the academic institution with the highest representation of women in the world.
At the same time, she reiterated Cuba's pride in being one of the six countries that have achieved scientific parity, according to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics. She also noted that 53% of inventors in Cuba are women, which shows the important role they play in the country's innovation and development.
Moreno Guerra reiterated Cuba's will to continue implementing a government system based on science, technology and innovation, which will contribute to the advancement of women and guarantee their full inclusion in this strategic sector for the country's development.
