Cuba joins the jubilee marking the 60th anniversary of the Cook Islands’ independence

Wellington, 8 August 2025 — With a spirit of jubilation, unity, and national pride, the Cook Islands celebrated the 60th anniversary of their independence in free association with New Zealand, a historic milestone that brought together communities from across the archipelago, its diaspora, and delegations from friendly nations.

In a festive atmosphere marked by traditional dances, songs, colourful parades, and official ceremonies, homage was paid to six decades of self-government, reaffirming the values shared by the Pacific islands: solidarity, resilience, respect for nature, and the preservation of cultural heritage.

The Republic of Cuba, represented by its Ambassador Luis Ernesto Morejón Rodríguez, took part in the commemorative events, highlighting the cultural richness and traditions that unite island nations despite geographic distance. In his remarks, the Ambassador noted that “the peoples of the islands, both in the Pacific and the Caribbean, are bound by a deep connection to the sea, a history marked by resilience, and a cultural heritage proudly passed down from generation to generation.”

The Te Maeva Nui festival, the heart of the celebration, offered a vibrant showcase of the Cook Islands’ identity, with artistic performances reflecting a strong sense of community and a commitment to preserving ancestral traditions.

The celebrations concluded with a renewed pledge of cooperation and friendship among the nations present, in a moment that not only looked to the past with gratitude but also to the future with hope.
