Paris, March 25, 2026. – Cuba ranks as the country with the highest proportion of women inventors or innovators globally, according to data from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) corresponding to 2021.
According to the report, 53% of persons cited in international patent applications in Cuba are women, placing the country at the top of a total of 74 nations analyzed. It is followed by the Philippines and Portugal, completing the top positions of the ranking.
This result is particularly relevant in a global context where the gender gap in innovation persists. Worldwide, women represent barely 17% of persons cited in international patent applications, evidencing the slow progress towards parity in this field.
Cuba's performance reflects sustained efforts to promote female participation in strategic sectors such as science, technology and innovation, in line with the principles of gender equality promoted within the framework of the United Nations system and UNESCO.
These advances consolidate the role of Cuban women in the generation of knowledge and in the search for innovative solutions to development challenges, contributing significantly to the country's scientific and technological progress.
