Cuba denounces new aggressive escalation by the United States at regional UNESCO meeting

Paris, February 2, 2026. – The Permanent Delegation of Cuba to UNESCO denounced, during the coordination meeting of the Group of Latin America and the Caribbean (GRULAC) accredited to the Organization, the scope of the new escalation of aggressions by the United States Government against Cuba and its implications for regional stability.

The Cuban representation recalled that Latin America and the Caribbean was proclaimed a Zone of Peace, a commitment also supported by the United Nations system, and warned of the threats posed by recent US actions, in open contradiction with the United Nations Charter and International Law.

Havana, January 30, 2026.- The Revolutionary Government condemns in the strongest possible terms the new escalation by the Government of the United States against Cuba, in its determination to impose an absolute blockade on fuel supplies to our country.

The executive order issued by the President of the United States, announced on January 29, 2026, declares a supposed national emergency, under which his government may impose trade tariffs on imports of products originating from countries that supply oil to Cuba.

Paris, January 24, 2026. – UNESCO celebrated the International Day of Education on January 23 under the theme "Youth Co-Create the Future of Education," a global event that placed young people at the center as indispensable partners for transforming education systems and building more peaceful, just, and sustainable societies.

On the occasion of the celebration of the International Day of Education under the theme "Youth Co-Create the Future of Education," UNESCO highlighted the central role of young people in transforming education systems for peace and sustainable development, launching its "Education Pact 2030." During the event, Cuba emphasized its historic commitment to free, universal, and quality education, exemplified by achievements such as its 99% enrollment rate and its international solidarity through the "Yo, sí puedo" literacy method, which contributed to declaring Honduras free of illiteracy in 2025. Simultaneously, the Cuban delegation denounced the impact of the US blockade, which hinders access to technology, educational materials, and academic cooperation, limiting opportunities for Cuban youth and violating the right to education, while reaffirming its determination to continue advancing and collaborating with the international community.

Paris, January 23, 2026. – During the commemorative ceremony for the 67th anniversary of the Triumph of the Cuban Revolution, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cuba to UNESCO, María del Carmen Herrera Caseiro, delivered a speech highlighting the solid history of collaboration, common values, and shared commitment to effective multilateralism between Cuba and the Organization.

A central point of her address was the acknowledgment of UNESCO's "sustained support for the Cuban people's battle against the economic, commercial, and financial blockade," through its annual contribution to the UN Secretary-General's report. This support, she stated, "is of cardinal importance in the face of the unprecedented intensification of the US government's policy of hostility and aggression against Cuba, as well as Cuba's continued inclusion on the spurious US unilateral list of State Sponsors of Terrorism."
