Cuban Ambassador to UNESCO denounces tightening of the blockade and campaigns of disinformation and media manipulation against Cuba

Paris, 26 March 2026. An open and cordial atmosphere characterized the meeting between the new Assistant Director-General for Communication and Information, Ms. Mariya Gabriel, and the Ambassador of Cuba to UNESCO, María del Carmen Herrera Caseiro, during which both exchanged views on the importance of the Sector and agreed on the need to strengthen it in order to address today’s complex challenges.

Referring to Cuba’s commitment to the development of the Communication and Information Sector and highlighting important legislative advances at the national level, the representative of the Island denounced the impact of the tightening of the United States blockade against Cuba, particularly the energy siege imposed on the country through the executive order signed by the U.S. President on 29 January, whose effects impact all sectors of national life, severely harming the population.

Cuba leads global female participation in innovation, according to WIPO data

Paris, March 25, 2026. – Cuba ranks as the country with the highest proportion of women inventors or innovators globally, according to data from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) corresponding to 2021.

According to the report, 53% of persons cited in international patent applications in Cuba are women, placing the country at the top of a total of 74 nations analyzed. It is followed by the Philippines and Portugal, completing the top positions of the ranking.

Cuba promotes teacher training to integrate the educational game "African Diaspora" in the classroom

Paris, March 25, 2026. – More than 70 schools and community projects in Havana and Artemisa participated in a training workshop aimed at incorporating the educational game "African Diaspora" into the classroom, an initiative promoted by UNESCO to strengthen more inclusive and rigorous teaching of the history of Africa and its diaspora.

The training meeting made it possible to train teachers and educational actors in the pedagogical use of this tool, conceived to foster collaborative learning, critical thinking and the recognition of cultural diversity. The game invites students to discover characters, traditions and historical episodes of Africa and the Caribbean through participatory and innovative dynamics.

Cuba highlights UNESCO's support against the blockade and energy siege at GRULAC meeting with the Director-General

Paris, March 24, 2026. – Within the framework of the consultation of the Director-General of UNESCO, Dr. Khaled El-Enany, with the Group of Latin American and Caribbean Countries (GRULAC) on the UNESCO 80 Roadmap, Cuba reaffirmed its support for the initiative, while positively assessing the transparency and inclusive nature of the process of elaborating the proposal, aimed at strengthening the Organization in a complex international context.

The meeting was also an opportunity for the Cuban delegation to denounce the intensification of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States, as well as the energy siege that has a cross-cutting impact on all sectors of society, including education, culture, communication, information and science.

Cuba participates in consultation meeting of IOC Electoral Group III on governance reforms

Paris, March 23, 2026. – The Permanent Delegation of the Republic of Cuba to UNESCO participated in the consultation meeting of Electoral Group III of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), held virtually, in coordination with the Sub-Commission for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions (IOCARIBE).

The meeting aimed to exchange views among Member States on the ongoing processes related to IOC governance reforms, as well as on broader United Nations system reform dynamics with implications for the Commission's work.
